Essential oils in scalp serums: what to look for

Scent, sensation and efficacy are separate questions.

Divi Scalp Serum, 30 ml pale green bottle with matching dropper.
THE USEFUL TAKEAWAY

A cooling or tingling sensation is not a measure of hair growth. Choose aromatic formulas according to your preferences and known sensitivities.

Check the complete scent profile

Some scalp serums use aromatic plant oils rather than, or alongside, a generic parfum listing. Divi lists tea tree, peppermint and eucalyptus oils plus menthol. The checked TYPEBEA list includes fragrance and several aromatic oils; the current Vegamour GRO list includes bergamot oil.

Our directory flags these ingredients as a scent consideration. It does not label the whole product good or bad. People differ in what they enjoy and what they already know they need to avoid.

Do not judge performance by sensation

A formula may feel cooling, fresh or noticeable without demonstrating a change in hair growth. Sensation is an experience; efficacy is a claim that requires an appropriate measurement. Applying extra product to chase a stronger sensation is not a useful comparison method.

The same caution applies to marketing language about an energised or refreshed scalp. Ask what was measured, in whom and against what comparison. A pleasant ritual and a treatment result should be described separately.

A practical choice

If you actively avoid scented leave-in products, use the fragrance filter and then check the current ingredients yourself. If you enjoy scent, start with an ordinary purchase rather than a large recurring bundle until you know whether you want the routine. Stop using a product that causes irritation and seek appropriate advice if symptoms persist.
